Recruiters see gaps constantly. A clearly explained one is a non-event. An obviously concealed one is a red flag.
Where to address it
You don't need a paragraph of apology. In most cases a single dated line in your experience section, treated like any other entry, does the whole job:
Career break — family caregiving · 2024–2025
That's it. It's honest, it's dated so there's no mystery, and it closes the question before anyone can wonder. If the gap is short — under a few months — you often don't need to mention it at all; using years rather than months on your dates quietly absorbs it.
Lines that work, by situation
- Redundancy: "Role eliminated in company-wide restructuring; used the period to complete [course/certification]." Neutral, factual, forward-looking.
- Caregiving: "Career break to provide full-time family care." No detail owed beyond that.
- Health: "Personal health break, now fully resolved and available." You're not required to disclose anything medical.
- Study or reskilling: list it as what it was — a qualification with dates. That's not a gap, it's a role.
- Raising children: "Career break for childcare." Common, understood, needs no defence.
Whatever the reason, keep it one line, keep it true, and where you can, point at something you did with the time — a course, freelance work, volunteering. It reframes the gap as continued momentum.
What not to do
- Don't lie about dates. Background checks find it and it ends the process instantly.
- Don't over-explain. A paragraph of justification signals shame where a line signals confidence.
- Don't leave it blank and hope. An unexplained gap invites worse assumptions than the truth.
Handled plainly, a gap costs you almost nothing. The candidates who struggle with gaps are usually struggling with how they're presenting them — not the gap itself.
